Signal brief — cycle 2027‑Q1
First read · issued October 2026 · Rhine and Danube · lead time up to twelve months
|
|
The call this cycle
| Rhine |
Baseline only. A directional call is issued from the Q1 2027 cycle, for the April–July window.
|
| Danube |
Baseline only. Same window, same release point.
|
We are more than twelve months from the 2027 season. At that distance there is no deterministic
physical output to read. So this cycle carries the baseline layer, and says so — rather than
implying a precision the physics does not support. The directional call, with a confidence band,
is released once the horizon closes to six months.

|
Baseline layer
The slow variables that sit under the seasonal call. Reported as an explicit status, never as a
confirmed event.
|
Land water storage
Two consecutive low-water seasons (2025, 2026). Whether storage is still in deficit is
pending measurement.

Multi-year precipitation deficit
Basin-scale accumulation is not yet processed to our own series. This line stays empty until
it is.

Alpine snowpack
The snow season has not started. First read due December–January, from the glacier and
station network.

What was already on the board
The record was set in August 2026. Every step below is a public reading, not an interpretation.
| Winter 2024/25 |
Third-warmest winter half-year on record. By the end of April, Swiss glaciers held about
13% less snow than the 2010–2020 average, measured across 21 glaciers.
|
| April 2025 |
The Kaub gauge fell to 79 cm, against a trade-halt threshold of about 77 cm.
|
| H1 2025 |
Rhine cargo volumes were already down about 6% year on year — 135 Mt against 143.6 Mt.
|
| 22 June 2026 |
With Kaub at 106 cm, Germany’s Federal Institute of Hydrology put an 85% probability
on falling below 97 cm by 30 June. It did.
|
| 14 Aug 2026 |
Kaub fell to about 6 cm — the lowest since systematic records began in 1880.
|
The forecast was not the gap. The response was.

This brief returns the signal, its magnitude and its lead time. It does not return what the
signal means for your sector. The same reading pushes two industries in opposite directions,
and that call is yours to make.
The read-across map covers twenty-two industries and shows the transmission path for each.

How this is produced
- Public official sources only, each one named on the line it supports.
- One brief per cycle. The read-across map is re-verified when a source publishes, not on a fixed calendar.
- Next issue: cycle 2027‑Q2, released when the horizon closes to six months.

This is directional climate and hydrology intelligence. It is not a water-level forecast, a
navigational authority, or investment advice. Station values should be read against the primary
gauge records. Sample edition — shown for format.
