Method & sources

How we read the season.

One directional call, built from public data and read by hand. No black box, no proprietary gauge network — here is exactly what feeds the read, and where the honest gaps are.

The signal chain

From ice to water: what we watch, in the order it propagates toward your navigation season.

Alpine snow & ice accumulation · glacier mass · precipitation Spring melt timing and volume of snowmelt River flow discharge on the Rhine & Danube Navigation season capacity · rerouting · pricing

Four data layers

Each release combines these layers. Two are live and verified; the baseline layer is the honest gap we are closing.

Layer 01 · Live

Hydrology & drought

Gauge networks (PEGELONLINE), CCNR/CHR flow status, Copernicus EDO soil-moisture and drought maps. The operational backbone of every call.

Live · verified
Layer 02 · Live

Seasonal climate

Seasonal outlooks from WMO / C3S / NOAA, ENSO state, and the snow-to-flow lag literature (ERL 2025: 44–79 day lag).

Live · verified
Layer 03 · Slow variable

Cryosphere trend

GLAMOS glacier mass and multi-year precipitation deficit. Structural context for the season, not a single-event signal.

Framework · pending measurement
Layer 04 · Slow variable

Terrestrial water storage

GRACE-FO total water storage as the background-probability amplifier for ≥12-month reads. Pairs with, never replaces, the condition lines.

Framework · pending measurement
Honest gap (I2). The baseline layer (GRACE-FO TWS, GLAMOS glacier, multi-year precipitation deficit) is currently a design frame with no measured data yet. Until it is backed by real readings, any ≥12-month statement is labelled framework · pending measurement and is never presented as a confirmed event.

Sources we aggregate

Public, official, and peer-reviewed. We add the reading — not a private data feed.

PEGELONLINE — German federal gauge network (water levels & discharge)
CCNR / CHR — Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine
Copernicus EDO — European Drought Observatory (soil moisture, alerts)
WMO / C3S — seasonal climate outlooks
NOAA — ENSO state and long-range signals
GLAMOS — Swiss glacier monitoring (cryosphere trend)
GRACE-FO — terrestrial water storage (background probability)
Peer-reviewed literature — snow-drought → streamflow lag (ERL 2025, etc.)

What we do, and don't, claim

We claim

A directional read — favourable / corrective / defensive — with the public evidence behind it, and the action window it implies for your decisions.

We don't claim

A water-level forecast, a navigational authority, or investment advice. Vessel-specific operational decisions remain with the operator.

We show

The chain, the layers, and the sources — so you can audit the read yourself and see where the gap is.

We avoid

Manufacturing anxiety. We state only checkable facts and one honest directional call — never a scarier number than the data supports.
